Her hand lifts in front of her,
and she shakes it up and down, her pointer finger extended.
There is meaning there,
but I cannot hold it in my head.
Her features move, rearranging themselves.
Wrinkles bunch up around her eyes,
and her mouth changes shape.
I know this shows “emotion,”
but is it “anger,” “shame,” “fear” or “lust”?
I have learned these words, and I can use them in a sentence.
“Mr. Jones is angry about gas prices.”
“Mrs. Smith is ashamed of her coprolalia.”
She shakes her head.
This sometimes means “no.”
Her voice is loud, and she is not saying “No.”
“I’m very disappointed . . .”
Disappointed is messing up a drawing,
or missing the ball for the seventy-ninth time.
Her hand drops,
and I have missed the ball again.

What I’m Reading
Recently Read and Rated- The Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut - Rating: 3/5I'm not sure I "got" this book. There were parts I really enjoyed, and parts that just left me puzzled and annoyed. Maybe I need to re-read it? I'm certainly going to read more Vonnegut, so in that sense it was a successful experience.
- The Wind's Twelve Quarters by Ursula K. Le Guin - Rating: 5/5Ursula K. Le Guin and her writing have had a formative influence on me ever since I first cracked open A Wizard of Earthsea when I was ten or so. She has expanded my mind and expanded my horizons. These are some of her very finest speculative-fiction short stories from 1962 to 1974—I can't believe...
